Meet Our Family: Tom Wright (as told by granddaughter, Erin, with some help from her dad, Tom). Tom was the second child of Jack and Anna Wright. Like the rest of his siblings, he grew up in Larksville and on turning 18 left high school to serve in the Navy. He served as a gunman aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway at the end of World War II and sailed from Iceland to Cuba, protecting the coast. Upon returning home, he decided he didn’t want to work in the coal mines. Grandma Wright’s brother, Tom and his wife, Nina, were living in Detroit and Uncle Tom helped him find a job at General Motors. He moved to Detroit and started working for Cadillac where he worked for over 30 years until he retired.Throughout everything, he kept in touch with Mary JuneTobin, daughter of Elizabeth and John Tobin of Wilkes-Barre. He met June as kids as Grandma Wright and Elizabeth “Betty” were close friends. Grandma Wright was even Betty’s maid of honor! Tom and June kept in touch throughout the years and were married in 1958. They settled in Detroit and started their family of three boys – Tom, Toby and Tim.While Tom was working at Cadillac as a Buffer, buffing cars after they were painted, June was working in the local church doing office support and running the catechism program. After they both retired, Tom and June were a huge hit on the family reunion circuit, always performing a duet at the Legion. Unfortunately for both of them, their musical gifts weren’t passed down the family tree! Tom and June both passed away but leave behind a lovely (or so we like to think) legacy in the Michigan arm of the Wright clan!
