John (Jack) Hughes will be 98 years old in August 2021, making him the oldest living member of the Wright family. He is the first child of Gene and Nanc (Anna), brother of Molly, Dick, Nancy and Peggy.
Jack lived a remarkable life. He was raised in Wilkes-Barre but spent many days in Larksville playing with his cousins. He was particularly close to Jimmy Wright as they were almost the same age and both loved playing baseball, among other things.
He attended St. Mary’s school, but left high school to serve in the Navy during World War II. He was assigned to the boats that carried the sailors to and from the beaches and on one of his missions, General Patton was a passenger. (If he has shared any of his military stories with his family, it would be awesome to hear them).
After his discharge from the Navy, he went to work and began settling in to civilian life, On an especially fortuitous day at the roller rink, he met May Jones and she skated away with his heart. After a long courtship they got married and raised two beautiful daughters, Sandy and Lori. Most of his career was spent at Mars Co. in New Jersey. After 36 years there, he retired from the Graphic Arts Department. One of the many perks of working at Mars was the easy access to so much delicious candy. The song “Candy Man” could have been written about him because he always had a big bag of candy which he shared with friends and family at every occasion.
By nature, Jack is a happy man with a beautiful, contagious smile, He was an avid golfer, bowler and lover of sports, especially the Phillies. May shared his love of golf and bowling and was an avid reader. His family can’t remember them ever having a harsh word for each other.Today he lives in his home in Easton, Pa. which he shares with his daughter, Sandy, He is very loved by his family and, if you search for an earlier post about him on this family page, you will read many warm, loving memories in the comments.
